The land is open and stony. Granite lies between fields and meadows, old walls run alongside the path, and the sky seems bigger than it does lower down. You climb all day, more than 500 metres in total, but almost never steeply. It’s mostly a gradual ascent, until you’re almost at 900 metres.
This is the last stage of the Caminho Nascente. After all these days, you almost fall into the rhythm automatically. In Trancoso you join the Camino de Torres, which goes to Santiago via Lamego and Braga. Then Trancoso comes into view on top of the hill, with its old town wall. You walk through the gate, into the narrow streets, and look for a terrace to sit down. You’ve arrived.
