You walk through open Alentejo. Cork oaks with their bare trunks, olive trees, dry fields and plenty of sky. From Evoramonte, with its castle on the hill, the land lies spread out wide before you. There is little shade and little to distract you. That is exactly what makes it such a pleasure to walk.

This stage takes a good 7 hours. The path rises and falls gently throughout, with a few long climbs that don’t really slow you down. The rhythm keeps changing, and so the morning flies by. In the afternoon, the final stretch drags a little longer than you’d like. Then you see Estremoz ahead, with its tower high above the rooftops. Behind you lies a land of straw-yellow grass and cork oaks in the sun.

Tips for this stage

  • There is little shade, so put on plenty of sun cream.
  • Take food and drink for the whole day, as you'll be walking for a long time through open country.
  • It's a good 7 hours of walking: start early, so you don't arrive in Estremoz in the heat of the day.
