You won’t feel it in your legs until after lunch, but you’ll feel it in your head sooner. It’s a long day, but not a struggle. The path rolls gently, and overall you descend more than you climb. You’ll fall into a rhythm without even trying.

Around 30 kilometres is mostly a matter of keeping going. The Alentejo landscape is open and wide, with plenty of sky and no sense of hurry. Your thoughts come and go. Allow about eight hours of walking, not counting breaks. Find your pace and stick to it.

Fronteira appears without any fuss. Your feet are tired, your mind is empty, and that feels good. Take your time, you have it.

Tips for this stage

  • Set off early in the morning, so you walk the longest stretches in the cool.
  • There is more downhill than uphill. Take the descents slowly, as it saves your knees.
  • Split the day into sections with set breaks, so the distance stays manageable.
