Today you can take your time. The stage is easy and takes a little over four hours. You climb and descend enough to keep your legs awake, but not enough to wear them out. There’s no steep slope to slog up anywhere.
From Peraboa you walk through open, rolling countryside, past fields and meadows. The ups and downs follow one another gently, and you can simply walk at your own pace. You’ll reach Belmonte in good time. The town is known as the birthplace of the explorer Pedro Álvares Cabral and has a centuries-old Jewish community. That makes a stroll through the old centre well worth your while. If you look back, the hills lie soft and golden in the late light.
