You leave Sagres with the wind in your face and the ocean at your side. It stays that way all day: bare cliffs, low scrub and bays that open up every few kilometres.
It’s an easy stage. The climbs are short, the highest point stays low and you walk along the edge of the land almost the whole way. The path winds over rocky stretches and through soft strips of sand, which are harder on your calves than you’d think. Allow just over five hours of walking, not counting breaks. Salema lies on a wide bay, an old fishing village where you can drop your rucksack and be in the water straight away. You have time, so make the most of it.
