You’ll feel this day in your legs first, then in your head. There’s no big mountain, just an endless up and down along the Cantabrian coast. Over 600 metres of climbing, packed into short, vicious stretches. Just as you find your rhythm, you lose it again.

In San Vicente de la Barquera you walk across the long bridge over the bay. It’s a good moment to stop for a while. Next comes Unquera, where you cross the Deva and walk into Asturias. Colombres lies just beyond it: a quiet village with large villas from the days of the indianos. You’ll get there after more than 8 hours of walking. Take your time and tackle it one stretch at a time.

Tips for this stage

  • Set off early: with more than 8 hours of walking, you don't want to arrive in the dark.
  • Take a long break in San Vicente de la Barquera; there's still a good stretch ahead afterwards.
  • Take the short climbs steadily; together they are harder than you think.
