Apple trees stand in rows between the meadows, and here and there a hórreo rests on its stone legs. That is how the day begins out of Colunga: green, damp and quiet.
It is an easy stage. The path rises and falls over hills, past farms and through patches of woodland, but nowhere does it ask much of your legs. At around 5 hours of walking, you will have the afternoon to yourself.
In Villaviciosa, a choice awaits that matters. Here you can branch off onto the Camino Primitivo, via Oviedo. Both routes lead to Santiago, so give it some thought as you walk. On the last stretch you head downhill between apple trees and wet meadows, with the soft line of the ría in the distance.
