The scent of eucalyptus hangs between the trees as you leave Sigüeiro behind. Woodland path, tarmac, a small village, then woodland again. It’s an easy day of just over four hours’ walking, with a few gentle rises but nothing to trouble you. It all comes naturally.
Then comes Santiago: first the outskirts, with traffic and tower blocks. Not exactly a picture postcard. Keep going, because the old town will come soon enough. Through the narrow streets you follow the shells to the Praza do Obradoiro, with the cathedral towering above you. Haven’t sorted a bed yet? Do it before you set off, especially from May to September. Then take your time over the last few kilometres. Santiago isn’t going anywhere.
