At the quay in Caminha, the Minho lies broad and still in front of you, with Spain on the far bank. First, you have to get across. The ferry to A Guarda doesn’t always run; tides and the season play a part. So check beforehand that it’s sailing. If it isn’t, there’s a water taxi. The crossing by little boat to Spain brings you onto quiet paths.
On the Spanish side, put your watch forward an hour. After that you walk along the coast, with the Atlantic Ocean beside you, over rolling terrain. It’s an easy day, although waiting for the crossing can sometimes take longer than a climb. Oia sits by the sea, with the old monastery right next to the water. Let the ferry set your morning, and the rest will follow by itself.
