Your legs are still fresh and your head is full. That changes today. There’s hardly any climbing, as it’s a flat day. What counts is the distance: almost 32 kilometres, a good 8 hours on the road. For a first stage, that’s a hefty opener.
You walk out of Lisbon, first along the Tagus, later through suburbs and across industrial estates. Not always pretty, and dull in places, but honest. Much of the way is paved, and after a while you’ll feel it in your feet. Above all, find your own pace, because the route is still long. In Alverca do Ribatejo you step back into the Camino in an ordinary town: a seat, a shower and something to eat are enough. Take it easy, you’ve nothing to prove to anyone on the first day.
