Wheat fields to the horizon, a sky that seems bigger than at home and a path that just keeps going straight. This is the Meseta. There is very little climbing or descending, but there is hardly any shade and the wind catches you from the plain. It is an easy day, ideal for simply enjoying the walk.
Hontanas lies tucked away in a valley. You only see it when you are almost on top of it. Further on stands the ruin of the monastery of San Antón, with a large arch over the road. Then comes Castrojeriz, a long village strung out along the route. Above the rooftops sits the hill with the remains of a castle, golden yellow in the late light.
