Hilly country with meadows, woodland and tiny hamlets. The higher you climb, the wider the views become. You really earn the best stretch of the day: the steepest climb is a full 350 metres uphill in one go. Take your time, stop to catch your breath whenever you need to, and look around you.

Up on the high ground, you walk into Galicia. You’ll notice it from the signs, and from the feeling that you’re another step closer to Santiago. After that it’s up and down again, and your legs will be glad when A Fonsagrada comes into view. Walking for well over seven hours is a long time, so start early and don’t let yourself be rushed along the way.

Tips for this stage

  • Take the climb at your own pace; stopping for a moment is all part of it.
  • Bring an extra layer: it's colder and windier up high.
  • Well over seven hours is a long day: start early, then you won't need to rush.
