Tábara is easy to leave behind. The last houses disappear, the road becomes a sandy track and the landscape opens up: fields, a wide sky and the odd tree here and there.

It’s an easy day. Hardly any climbing, hardly any descending, so mostly you just walk. That’s welcome on day two, because your legs get used to the rhythm of the Sanabrés without being put to the test straight away. Your thoughts have all the space they need. It is still a good 21 kilometres, though, and almost six hours is long enough to feel it in your feet. Santa Marta de Tera comes into view quietly, a small village with a Romanesque church that is well worth a look. You arrive with enough energy left to wander around for a bit. So plan a proper break along the way, with food from your rucksack.

Tips for this stage

  • Almost six hours of walking: take a proper break rather than ploughing on.
  • There's little change in elevation, so you can start gently and find your own pace.
  • Pack plenty of food and water in your rucksack for the whole stretch.
