You leave La Pola de Gordón behind as the valley narrows. The road begins to climb and the mountains draw closer. Sooner or later, you’re right in the middle of them.
The first serious work is a steep climb of more than 400 metres. Next comes Poladura de la Tercia, and then the highest and loneliest stretch of the route begins: along the ridge to Arbás. Few people, plenty of sky and views. In mist or snow, this is not a stage to walk alone. Wait for company or for a better day.
On a clear day, you walk down off the ridge into Arbás del Puerto, tired and content. So check the weather the evening before and take plenty of food and water with you.
