You leave Espelette behind, with its white houses and red peppers hanging from the façades. The road leads into the Basque hill country. It rolls, but it won’t wear you out. This is an easy day.
It’s a short stage, and that’s exactly the idea. You walk via Ainhoa to the border and cross into Spain. The landscape stays green and Basque, so only you will know that you’ve suddenly walked into another country. Ainhoa is a lovely spot for a stop along the way. After almost four hours of walking, you arrive in Urdax. You get there in plenty of time, so the afternoon is entirely yours.
