You’ll soon leave Torremejía behind. A few streets, a coffee if the bar is already open, and then the village simply stops. The open land of Extremadura begins.
This is a quiet stage of around four hours. The path descends gently for almost the whole day, and there are hardly any real climbs. You walk past fields, vineyards and olive trees, often on wide country tracks. On the open stretches the sun beats down directly on your head.
Then Mérida comes into view. The city has Roman roots, and you can see them everywhere. Because the day is short, you’ll have time left over to look around. Before you go, glance back one more time: the flat fields lie golden yellow, with a lone olive tree here and there in the late light.
