This is a day for patience. You’ll feel it in your legs only after lunch, but in your head much sooner: it takes a long time to get there. There’s no climb that breaks you, but the kilometres quietly pile up.

From Trancoso you walk into rolling countryside. Climbs and descents take turns, with no big spikes. Just over 400 metres up, and then a little more back down. You’ll notice that last part in your knees. Find your rhythm, take a break wherever it suits you and don’t turn it into a race. With almost 8 hours on the clock, you have plenty of time.

At the end you walk into Sernancelhe. Rucksack off, boots off, sit down for a moment. Only then think about food. Catch your breath.

Tips for this stage

  • Bring enough food and water; you'll be on the road for almost 8 hours.
  • There's more descent than climbing: poles and well-laced boots will spare your knees.
  • Start early, so you can walk at an easy pace and arrive in daylight.
