Green hills, meadows, stone walls and shady woodland paths. Every now and then there’s a cow on the path and mist hanging between the trees. That’s what the day looks like: up and down, with more descents than climbs.

After Triacastela the route splits and you have to choose. Via Samos, past a large Benedictine monastery, it’s about 25 kilometres. Via San Xil and Montán it’s shorter, about 18 kilometres, through quiet hills. Both end in Sarria.

The last stretch takes you between the first houses and into Sarria. Many pilgrims start their final week here, so it suddenly gets busier. Find a terrace, put your rucksack down and take your shoes off.

Tips for this stage

  • Decide in Triacastela which route you're taking, because the path splits after that.
  • Want to see the monastery at Samos? Then choose the longer route.
  • Looking for peace and quiet? The route via San Xil is shorter and quieter.
